Wing Nien Foods, a Hayward, Calif.-based manufacturer of private brand sauces, marinades and dressings, and SanoRice Holding B.V., a producer of rice, corn and cereal cakes and snacks headquartered in the Netherlands, took top honors in the second annual Private Brand Taste Test. Store Brands magazine and ECRM, Solon, Ohio, partnered to host the event, which was held in Orlando on April 13, in conjunction with ECRM’s Private Brand Foods Efficient Program Planning Sessions (EPPS).

This year, 10 private label food vendors put their specialties up against the products’ national brand counterparts. Ten judges representing various food retail companies performed “blind” tastings of each pair of products, noting their preference between the two. When all was said and done, both Wing Nien and SanoRice had earned a perfect 10 out of 10 for their sauce and rice products, respectively.

Coming in a close second was the Fremont Co. of Fremont, Ohio. Nine out of the 10 judges preferred the company’s private brand ketchup to another brand.
